The first webinars in the Section of Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion Public Health Webinar Series from 2015, 2016 and 2017 are listed below.

The webinars are free and short – lasting about 20 minutes apiece, with 10 additional minutes for questions and answers and to explore ways we can all collaborate. They air live the third Tuesday every other month at 1 p.m. Find the link to register under each month's listing to sign up for the live webinars.

2015
- Meet the Section (6/16/15 -watch now). Section Chief Kathy Allely and Deputy Andrea Fenaughty talk about the burden of chronic diseases in Alaska and the Section’s work to prevent those diseases and promote health. Download pdf (2.6mb)
- Play Every Day (7/21/15 - watch now). The Section’s public education campaign strives to reduce sugary drink consumption and increase physical activity among Alaska kids. The campaign began in FY12 to address the health concerns associated with childhood obesity. In Alaska, 1 out of 3 children are overweight or obese. Download pdf (1.8mb)
- Responding to Cancer Concerns in Yakutat (8/18/15 - watch now). What happens when communities want to know if they have an increased risk of getting cancer from pollution in their environment? David O’Brien, data analyst with the Alaska Cancer Registry, discusses the analysis, response and outcomes of a cancer cluster request from the community of Yakutat. Download pdf (436kb)
- Partnering with providers to increase screening rates (9/15/15 - watch now). Adults should be screened to prevent chronic diseases. Section staff review how key preventive screenings were determined and how the message is being shared. Download pdf (1.4mb)
- Working with schools to improve the health of Alaska youth (10/20/15 - watch now). Schools are in a unique position to have more influence on the lives of young people than any other social institution. Wendy Hamilton, School Health Program Manager, describes how agencies can work together to improve student health and the school setting using the new Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child model. - Ending the Epidemic: Tobacco Control Matters (11/17/15 - watch now). Tobacco remains the No. 1 cause of preventable death in the U.S. and accounts for 1 out of every 3 cancer deaths. Learn how communities across the state are implementing public health policies to address emerging trends in e-cigarettes, marijuana, health care systems change, and youth prevention. - Evolution of the Alaska Food Policy Council (12/12/15 - watch now). Registered dietitian Diane Peck will talk about the Section’s work during the past decade to create the council and help it evolve into a nonprofit to strengthen Alaska’s food systems and improve nutrition and health. - Helping Alaskans manage diabetes (01/19/16 - watch now). Nelly Ayala, manager of the Diabetes Prevention and Control Program, will talk about how diabetes self-management education (also called DSME) helps people with diabetes learn how nutrition, physical activity, monitoring their blood sugar levels, and more can help them better manage their disease. - Preventing injuries and keeping Alaskans safe during the dark winter (02/16/16 - watch now). Learn how the Injury Prevention Program teaches Alaskans about pedestrian and bicycle challenges that are unique to our state.

- Fighting a winnable battle: Preventing & screening for colorectal cancer (03/15/16 - watch now). “80% by 2018” is a new initiative to prevent and improve early detection of colorectal cancer by partnering with worksites and community health centers to increase cancer screening to 80% of adults ages 50 and older. - The Alaska Heart Disease and Stroke Program (04/19/16 - watch now). Janice Gray, Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention Nurse Consultant, will talk about quality improvement projects to improve the care of patients with high blood pressure in a number of Federally Qualified Health Centers in Alaska. - Using Alaska’s Indicator-Based Information System (IBIS) to better understand the health status of Alaskans (05/17/16 - watch now). Data Analyst Charles Utermohle will talk about the Section’s online resource that can answer your questions on leading health indicators in Alaska, share current statistics and trends on health problems, and provide graphical views of the state’s health data. - Play Every Day partners to share physical activity message (9/20/16) watch now> Play Every Day, the state’s public education campaign to prevent and reduce childhood obesity, worked with the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium (ANTHC) to film two new public service announcements (PSAs) in rural communities.
