The Section of Public Health Nursing is a learning organization. A career in public health nursing calls for a lifetime of learning. There are changes in practice and in science that require maintaining currency and competencies through on-going learning opportunities. The Section of Public Health Nursing is an Approved Provider of continuing nursing education by the Alaska Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

The Section of Public Health Nursing provides and promotes continuing education opportunities for all staff to assure they are equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to best serve the public health needs of Alaska. Come and grow with Alaska PHNs!

Training and Orientation

The PHN I position offers guided experiences and training to develop the broad range of skills and knowledge in public health nursing that is needed for practice in Alaska. The orientation plan for nurses who are new to the practice of public health nursing ensures that the PHN becomes ready to practice anywhere in the state with the full complement of skills and knowledge expected of an Alaska PHN.

Each position in the Section of Public Health Nursing has an orientation and training plan. All required trainings are provided to staff consistent with their job responsibilities and career development goals. Continuing education opportunities are available to staff.

The Public Health Nursing Academy

The PHN Academy is an intensive orientation and training program for PHNs hired by the Section of Public Health Nursing. Designed to build a sound foundation in public health nursing in Alaska, the PHN Academy combines face to face learning experiences, self study, distance learning, and assignments within the context of the workplace and job role. The PHN Academy offers the opportunity to benefit from the incredible wealth of knowledge and talent within the Section of Public Health Nursing and Division of Public Health. Students in the PHN Academy hear from experts in child health, women’s health, disease surveillance and epidemiology, learn from the accumulated wisdom and knowledge about working with communities, Native and immigrant cultures, and share their own wisdom and experiences with other PHNs in the Academy.

The PHN Academy is offered in webinar format in 1-2 hour sessions and takes about six months to complete. CEUs for nurses are offered for many of the modules and units. Completion of the PHN Academy is important in progressing to the next levels of PHN practice.

The goals of the PHN Academy are to:

  • Define and understand what public health is: the Core functions of public health, the 10 Essential services, and applicable public health authorities and statutes.
  • Define and understand what public health nursing is: History of public health nursing, core PHN competencies, Standards of Public Health Nursing Practice, and Public Health Nursing in Alaska.
  • Provide an orientation to the Alaska Division of Public Health system as well as the partner systems throughout Alaska
  • Provide a comprehensive orientation to our PHN system, including our policies, services, work in the communities, management plan and goals, etc
  • And to grow and develop the best PHNs in the country!

An Advanced PHN Academy is currently being developed and piloted. The Advanced Academy is for the professional and career development of experienced public health nurses and managers. Syllabus and Teaching Modules are in development.
