End-Stage Renal Dialysis (ESRD) Facilities
Licensing, oversight, and monitoring of Alaska ESRDs
Overview
An End-Stage Renal Dialysis (ESRD) facility is a hospital unit that is approved to furnish the full spectrum of diagnostic, therapeutic, and rehabilitative services required for the care of ESRD patients. This includes inpatient dialysis (furnished directly or under arrangement) and outpatient dialysis.
Who qualifies?
Licensing & Certification:
- ESRDs are not required to be licensed in the State of Alaska.
- ESRDs that meet federal requirements may be federally certified and approved to participate in Medicare. (See Resources below.)
How to sign up
There is no state licensing application process.

Federal requirements
To participate in Medicare, an ESRD must meet federal requirements and be separately certified and approved.
Federal requirements for ESRDs are outlined in the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR). A list of specific regulations that apply to each facility type can be found in the Medicare State Operations Manual Appendix.
