Early & Periodic Screening, Diagnostic & Treatment Program

The goal of the Early Periodic Screening, Diagnostic and Treatment (EPSDT) program, also known as the Alaska Well Child Program, is to ensure that all Medicaid and Denali KidCare-eligible children receive the health care they need, when they need it. The EPSDT program’s focus is on promoting the physical, mental, social, emotional, and behavioral health. Services are available to all Medicaid/Denali KidCare-eligible children under age 21.

EARLYChildren should receive quality health care beginning at birth and continuing throughout childhood and adolescence including the identification, diagnosis and treatment of medical conditions as early as possible.
PERIODICChildren should receive periodic well child and dental visits at intervals that meet the following minimum recommendations:

Additional health and dental screenings may be provided between regularly scheduled visits as medically necessary.
SCREENINGChildren should be screened for health, developmental, and behavioral concerns. Services should include health history, developmental and behavioral screening and assessment, physical exam, immunizations, lab tests, and screenings for dental, vision, and hearing.

Lead screening: Medicaid and Denali KidCare require providers to screen enrolled children for blood lead levels at ages 12 and 24 months.

DIAGNOSTICChildren should receive further evaluation of health, developmental or social-emotional problems identified during well-child visits that may require treatment.
TREATMENTChildren should receive treatment for health, developmental or social-emotional problems identified during well-child visits.
