About Rural and Community Health Systems
The Section includes a wide range of public health and medical programs that are
administered by the following four program units:
- Public Health Preparedeness
- Emergency Medical Services (EMS) engages
in myriad activities to ensure that qualified and properly equipped
emergency medical services personnel are available to respond
to the emergency medical needs of Alaska's citizens.
- Alaska Trauma Program spans the full spectrum of prevention and emergency care to recovery and rehabilitation. The Alaska Trauma Registry includes all injury deaths and hospital admissions. All injury prevention efforts begin by looking at the numbers — what injuries are occurring, when, where, how, why, and to whom.
- Office of Healthcare Access works to improve community healthcare and decrease access shortages across the state.
Rural and Community Health Systems performs a wide range of services. These include:
- Development of community health programs to help improve access to primary care among rural and underserved populations;
- Injury surveillance;
- Emergency medical services and trauma care systems development;
- Systems to educate and alert public health providers through telecommunications.
