Radiological Health
Radiological Health is a program within the State Public Health Laboratories which is responsible for safe use of radiation sources within the state of Alaska.
Under Alaska Statute, the Radiological Health Program is responsible for Radiation Protection by developing policies for evaluating radiation hazards, conducting surveys/investigations, and providing training to partners. This includes:
- measurement and safe use of radiation,
- reviewing plans and shielding specifications for radiation sources,
- inspecting facilities where radiation sources are used, and
- contracting with other agencies where a cooperative effort is required in order to address radiation hazards.
These responsibilities include both ionizing and non-ionizing sources, and radiation producing devices as well as radioactive materials.
Other Partners
The main office for Radiological Health is in Anchorage; however, radon related activities are conducted out of the University of Alaska Fairbanks.
Environmental surveys and disaster response to radiation in the environment are the responsibility of the Department of Environmental Conservation.
