​Traumatic and Acquired Brain Injury (TABI) Program

​​Traumatic and Acquired Brain Injury (TABI) is defined as an “injury from physical force or internal damage to the brain or its coverings, not of a degenerative or congenital nature, that produces an altered mental state and that results in a decrease in cognitive, behavioral, emotional, or physical functioning​.” (AS 47.80.529)

The Traumatic and Acquired Brain​ Injury (TABI) Program supports Alaskans who have experienced a Traumatic or Acquired Brain Injury in a variety of circumstances. Below you will find a brief description of the supports provided and how to apply fo receiver these services.​


TABI Resource Facilitation and Peer Support

Person-centered supports for Alaskans with traumatic or acquired brain injuries are provided by four provider agencies in Alaska - Access Alaska, Daybreak, Southeast Alaska Independent Living (SAIL), and Maniilaq Association. 

TABI Program services may include:

  • Assistance in getting a TABI Diagnosis
  • Care plan development
  • Modeling and teaching independent living skills
  • Resource Referral to and help coordinating needed services and providers
  • Peer Support connections (both virtual and in-person)

TABI Supplemental Services (Mini-Grants)

Supplemental Services support individuals with TABI financial assistance for unmet qualifying needs. The maximum benefit per individual is $2,500 annually and $5000 within a five-year period and pays for supplies or services that are not covered by other sources.​

The State of Alaska Traumatic and Acquired Brain Injury (TABI) program, in accordance with AS 47.07.030, funds nonprofit agencies to provide services to individuals who have been diagnosed with a traumatic or acquired brain injury. Though these services are currently rather limited, the state has goals in place to: 

  • Expand supportive services into rural Alaska 

  • Compile a statewide registry of TABI individuals for longitudinal data collection and evaluation of service delivery (AS 47.80.500) 

  • Establish standards and recommendations for improving prevention, assessment, and care of persons with TABI in the state (AS 47.80.500)  

The University of Alaska Anchorage, Center for Human Development is the managing entity of the advisory board for the TABI Program. Since the board’s incorporation in 2003, their advocacy has been pivotal in the funding and inception of the TABI program and continues to be the voice of those with brain injuries in Alaska.
