Health Risks of Childhood Obesity
Alaskans can prevent many diseases if they grow up at a healthy weight and maintain that healthy weight throughout their lives. Children with overweight or obesity have higher chances of developing many of the same health consequences as adults with overweight and obesity — but they may experience these consequences while they’re still young.
Some of the physical and emotional health risks associated with childhood obesity include:
- High blood pressure and high cholesterol
- Type 2 diabetes
- Asthma
- Sleep apnea
- Social discrimination
Studies show that children and teens with obesity are more likely to become adults with obesity. Learn more about health problems associated with childhood obesity at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website.
