American Psychological Association
The APA has many brief articles, position papers, policy statements, and other resources relating to suicide. Recent articles have addressed suicide in youth, the need for rural providers, suicide risk factors, and suicide assessment. The site allows you to search for topics of interest. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Adminstration
The Center's mission is to decrease substance use and abuse by bringing effective prevention to every community. CSAP is the sole Federal organization with responsibility for improving accessibility and quality of substance abuse prevention services. The Center provides national leadership in the development of policies, programs, and services to prevent the onset of illegal drug use, underage alcohol and tobacco use, and to reduce the negative consequences of using substances. CSAP promotes a comprehensive prevention system approach that includes community involvement and partnership among all sectors of society.

Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA)
The nation’s largest patient-directed, illness-specific organization, DBSA educates the public concerning the nature of depressive and bipolar illnesses as treatable medical diseases and has a toll-free information and referral line in addition to its website. DBSA has a grassroots network of nearly 1,000 patient-run support groups that hold regular meetings across the United States and Canada. The Website section on Suicide Prevention has information for those thinking of suicide and those who respond.

Mental Health Statistics Improvement Program
Center for Mental Health Services
Explains how and what data are collected on mental health services, where to find such data, how to understand and report what's found and how to use data in mental health decision-making. Also describes how the Mental Health Statistics Improvement Program Policy Group develops standards for mental health data.

National Association for Rural Mental Health (NARMH)
Develops and enhances rural mental health and substance abuse services and supports mental health providers in rural areas. NARMH has added the goal of "Developing and proactively supporting initiatives that will strengthen the voices of rural consumers and their families." NARMH's mission is “linking voices to promote rural mental health.” NARMH carries out this mission through electronic (website & listervs) and print communication, an annual national conference, participation in national policy making, and special projects.

Offers a wide variety of resources useful to clinicians and their clients. Has a multidisciplinary approach that engages all disciplines to study every form of substance abuse as it affects society.

National Council for Community Behavioral Healthcare
The National Council is a nonprofit trade association serving the education, advocacy and networking needs of more than 800 community providers of mental health and addiction treatment services.

National Institutes of Mental Health (NIMH)
A component of the U.S. National Institutes of Health, the mission of NIMH is to reduce the burden of mental illness and behavioral disorders through research on mind, brain, and behavior. Different sections of this site tailor information to the needs of many different audiences including the general public, researchers, and mental health care providers. Interested members of the general public will find brief, understandable fact sheets and pamphlets describing suicide that occurs in the context of mental disorders, depression and bipolar disorder, and other mental health topics. A section on statistics gives data on the number of Americans who have different mental disorders and on variations in rates of certain mental disorders within racial/ethnic minority populations of the United States. Short descriptions of research illustrate the breadth of NIMH-funded science.

Offers news articles directed at psychology and psychiatry professionals on wide-ranging aspects of mental health, from research and treatment developments to policy and public perceptions to children's and forensic issues. Also offers job listings, a selected mental health "Link of the Day" and a free weekly e-mail newsletter on research and events in the mental health field.

Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)
SAMHSA is the Federal agency charged with improving the quality and availability of prevention, treatment, and rehabilitative services in order to reduce illness, death, disability, and cost to society resulting from substance abuse and mental illnesses. Comprehensive web site contains information on resources, clearinghouses, statistics, prevention, and more.

Substance Abuse Treatment Facility Locator
Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration
This searchable directory of drug and alcohol treatment programs shows the location of facilities around the country that treat alcoholism, alcohol abuse and drug abuse problems. The Locator includes more than 11,000 addiction treatment programs, including residential treatment centers, outpatient treatment programs, and hospital inpatient programs for drug addiction and alcoholism. Listings include treatment programs for marijuana, cocaine, and heroin addiction, as well as drug and alcohol treatment programs for adolescents, and adults.

Violence and Injury Prevention Program
This site seeks to help forensic examiners, law-enforcement officers, health professionals and family survivors prevent and respond to homicide-suicides. Offers advice on the steps relatives can take to prevent homicide-suicides and how they should deal with law-enforcement officers and each other if one happens. Also offers online tests of depression and impaired judgment and describes selected research.
