The Alaska Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) is an annual telephone survey that asks Alaska adults about their health, as well as behaviors that could affect their health. It includes questions about health care access, chronic conditions, diabetes, nutrition, physical activity, tobacco and alcohol use, marijuana use, oral health, cancer screening, injury prevention, demographics and more.
Organizations and groups across Alaska use BRFSS data to guide public health programs, support federal grants, ensure effective use of limited public health resources, evaluate the impact of services and programs, and improve the health of Alaskans.
Alaska’s survey is part of a national effort run by the
U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The CDC has conducted the BRFSS survey for nearly 40 years and now gathers information about health and behaviors from adults in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and three U.S. territories.
Get involved with Alaska BRFSS!
You can:
-
Take the survey. Alaska adults who are randomly chosen and called can participate. The Alaska BRFSS survey is anonymous and generally takes between 20–25 minutes. You can skip any questions that make you uncomfortable, and your information will never be linked back to you. If you receive a call at an inconvenient time, you can call back or request a call at a better time.
-
Use Alaska BRFSS data. Findings from the survey can support and inform health programs, or help organizations get the funding and resources they need to improve the health of Alaskans. Explore the
Alaska BRFSS Data Center or
submit a data request.
-
Propose survey questions. A small number of Alaska-specific questions are included on the survey each year. Proposals for question inclusion are due in late summer. To learn more about the question proposal process and due dates, subscribe to the
Alaska BRFSS listserv.
