Dengue

Aedes aegypti
Aedes aegypti from CDC

Dengue is the most common vector-borne viral disease in the world, and is endemic in at least 100 countries. It causes up to 100 million infections and 25,000 deaths each year. While many states, including Alaska, have reported confirmed cases of Dengue, these are almost always due to individuals who became infected while traveling to endemic countries, and developed symptoms after returing home.

There have been examples of locally acquired Dengue in the United States, however. States which have the species of mosquito which can spread Dengue might be at risk of developing locally acquired disease. Fortunately, Alaska is not known to harbor these species and is not considered at risk. Visit the sites below for more information.

Providers are reminded that Dengue is a reportable condition in Alaska, and suspected or confirmed cases should be reported to the Alaska Section of Epidemiology at 907-269-8000.
