Pediatric Specialty Clinics

Specialty clinics improve access to care for children in need of consultation, screening, and follow-up. The State of Alaska’s Section of Women’s Children and Family Health (WCFH) brings medical specialists to regional centers to offer specialty care in or close to communities where children and their families reside. Efforts are made to involve local health practitioners in these clinics to insure coordination of care. The Section of Women’s Children and Family Health offers 2 clinics:

Metabolic Clinic

The State of Alaska Metabolic Clinic offers a specialty clinic for individuals diagnosed with metabolic genetic conditions. Individuals commonly seen in this clinic include:

  • a child with a metabolic condition diagnosed through the Newborn Screening Program;
  • children and adults with changes in body chemistry such as extremely high and low protein, fat or sugar levels in their blood.

Neurodevelopmental Outreach Clinic

Neurodevelopmental screenings and diagnoses are delivered by Pediatric Neurodevelopmental Specialists from the Children’s Hospital and Medical Center in Seattle and the University of Virginia Children’s Hospital. These specialists offer screenings, evaluations, diagnoses, follow up referrals, recommendations for treatment and care, and information on early intervention and education programs, as needed.

These specialists offer screenings, recommendations for care, educational information, referrals as needed, and linkage to appropriate resources. Specialty providers travel to 11 clinic sites across the state where there are no local providers with specialty expertise.

The State of Alaska has transitioned sponsorship for 2 specialty clinics to community partners:

Cleft Lip and Palate Clinic

The Anchorage Cleft Clinic has transitioned sponsorship to Southcentral Foundation. The Alaska Cleft Lip and Palate Program at SCF will hold clinics on the ANMC campus and will continue to serve both Alaska Native and non-Native individuals. The team of providers will be comprised of many of the same specialists as participated in the State of Alaska Cleft Team. The Fairbanks clinic remains unchanged and is still sponsored by the State of Alaska through the Fairbanks Public Health Nursing Center.
