Who we are

The Analytical Chemistry programs at the State Public Health Laboratories work to support state and national health programs by providing lab testing and information. They help quickly detect toxic chemical exposures, assist in medical treatment, and prevent further harm.

What we do

Core functions and responsibilities include:

  • Children’s blood lead (Pb) testing - Providing data to help improve the health of children, through testing children's blood lead levels and by identifying sources of elemental lead
  • Helping Alaska hospitals detect toxic alcohols (methanol, isopropanol and ethylene glycol) in patients who cannot respond
  • Analytical testing and Toxicology - Providing and interpreting drug tests related to Driving Under the Influence (DUI)
  • Supporting state Child in Need of Aid evaluations for drug-endangered children
  • Responding to chemical emergencies or terrorism events with fast, accurate testing of people exposed to harmful chemicals. For more information, visit CDC's Emergency Preparedness and Response.
