Who we are
The HIV/STD Program works to prevent sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in Alaska. Staff use scientific research, public health experience, and data to guide statewide prevention and control efforts.
What we do
We prevent and manage HIV and STD infections in Alaska by:
- Investigating and monitoring STDs like gonorrhea, chlamydia, and syphilis, and HIV/AIDS
- Monitoring active infections and confirming diagnoses
- Referring patients to treatment and care services
- Interviewing patients about their sexual partners and helping notify partners about possible exposure
- Assisting partners with testing and treatment when needed
- Sharing data and health recommendations with healthcare providers and the public
- Providing guidance on public health policies for HIV and STDs
- Working with labs to improve testing for HIV and STDs
- Offering grants and support to local organizations for HIV prevention and care
- Training healthcare and social service providers on prevention, testing, and patient counseling
- Evaluating how well programs work to prevent and control HIV and STDs
