Alaska Emergency Medical Services for Children (EMSC)
Supporting the expansion and improvement of emergency care to children who need treatment for severe illness and injury
Who we are
The Alaska State Partnership Emergency Medical Services for Children (EMSC) Program is a federally funded initiative committed to the improvement of emergency care to children who need treatment for severe illness and injury.
What we do
Alaska's EMSC program works to improve the delivery of emergency services to children across Alaska through activities that are based on Performance Measures of the federal EMSC Program, such as:
- Collect and analyze pediatric emergency care coordination data utilizing the EMSC Data Center
- Increase pediatric training and education opportunities for emergency care providers
- Ensure hospital and agency disaster plans address the needs of children
- Recognize hospitals and prehospital EMS agencies for the pediatric emergency care coordination efforts
- Connect people from maternal, family, and child programs to speak out for children's emergency care needs
Program Information
Pediatric Readiness
Pediatric Readiness
Pediatric Readiness refers to the ability of an emergency medical service (EMS) agency or emergency department (ED) to provide timely, effective, and developmentally appropriate emergency care to children. It involves having the necessary personnel, equipment, policies, and protocols in place to address the unique physiological, anatomical, and psychological needs of pediatric patients. The first step to pediatric readiness is to designate a pediatric champion. A Pediatric Emergency Care Champion/Coordinator (PECC) ensures high-quality care for pediatric patients by updating guidelines, maintaining necessary resources, and advocates for improvements within the agency or department.

Survey & Assessments
Survey & Assessments
Alaska EMSC collects information on pediatric emergency care coordination through surveys and assessments administered with help from the National EMSC Data Center. The annual EMSC Survey, conducted from January to March, targets Alaska’s licensed, 911 responding ground EMS agencies. The National Pediatric Readiness Project assessments gather data on pediatric emergency care within U.S. EMS/ Fire-Rescue agencies and Emergency Departments helping to evaluate readiness, including staffing, equipment, and protocols, to improve pediatric patient outcomes.
