Overview

Alaskans who are ill, frail, or injured may need home modifications, like wheelchair ramps, to stay independent. If they qualify for an Alaska Medicaid waiver, the Environmental Modification (E-Mod) service may help cover the cost.

Waiver recipients work with a care coordinator to determine needed modifications and get cost estimates from Medicaid-certified contractors. The program covers up to $18,500 every three years. Senior & Disabilities Services (SDS) approves projects, and the care coordinator handles paperwork. Once work is completed, the contractor is reimbursed through the contractor that manages Alaska Medicaid payments.

Resources

These resources, created with support from the Living Well on the Last Frontier grant, provide basic information on home modifications to promote independence and safe aging-in-place.

Funded by the U.S. Administration for Community Living, this project aims to improve community integration, health, safety, and independence for individuals with developmental disabilities. It supports Alaska’s vision of a flexible system where people direct their own supports to lead meaningful lives at home, work, and in their communities.
