Senior Medicare Patrol
Prevent, detect, and report health care fraud, errors and abuse
Who we are
The Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) is a project that provides education for people on how to spot and report potential Medicare errors, fraud, waste, and abuse. Alaska's SMP is run by the Alaska Medicare Information Office.

What we do
Outreach, counseling, and education
SMPs empower and assist people on Medicare, their families, and caregivers to prevent, detect, and report health care fraud, errors, and abuse through outreach, counseling, and education.
Our activities have included virtual and in-person education and events. For example, we have hosted a Fraud Fair during national Medicare Fraud Prevention Week in June.
We share information on Department of Health (DOH) social media, like tips on how to prevent fraud and news about recent scams.
We help people on Medicare understand their Medicare Summary Notices (MSNs). See Additional Resources.
We also help direct reports of possible fraud and scams to the right authorities.
Report fraud
For help or to report fraud to the Alaska SMP, call the Medicare Information Office: 907-269-3680 in Anchorage, or 1-800-478-6065 elsewhere in Alaska.
Medicare's Online Service
Medicare's free, secure online service for accessing personalized information about your Medicare benefits and services.
After you sign in, you can view claims information, get quality information about your providers, create and print an "On the Go" report with information you can share with your healthcare providers, view and manage your drug list and pharmacy information, and view your current and upcoming preventive services calendar.

Understanding the Medicare Summary Notice (MSN)
The MSN is a report that shows health services or supplies billed to Medicare and amounts you may owe. It is sent every three months or when Medicare owes you money.
Check the MSN to make sure all the listed services were actually provided. If you have questions, call the number in the Customer Service box. If you disagree with a decision, you can file an appeal by following instructions in the notice.
