Behavioral Health - File a Complaint
Address concerns about a behavioral health agency or provider
Overview
If you have a concern about a provider or agency who helps with mental or behavioral health, you have the right to file a complaint. Complaints can address issues such as the quality of care, professionalism, or other concerns related to the services you received.
Who qualifies?
Anyone who is aware of a problem may file a complaint about an agency or a provider.
How to file a complaint
An agency or their provider
If you have a problem with a behavioral health agency or its staff, start by using the agency’s process to resolve the issue. If they don’t respond or fix the problem, you can contact us at the email address listed in the Contacts Section below.
An individual provider not with an agency
If you have a complaint about a provider who isn’t part of an agency, you can contact us at the email address listed in the Contacts Section below.
You can also file a complaint with the licensing board or organization that oversees the provider’s work:
-
Clinical Social Workers, Licensed Professional Counselors, or Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists, or other Licensed Professionals: Contact the state’s Professional Licensing Section at license@alaska.gov or 907-465-2550.
-
Chemical Dependency Counselors (CDC I, II, or supervisor): Contact the Alaska Commission for Behavioral Health Certification at acbhc@akcertification.org or 907-332-4333.
A HIPAA-Covered Entity
If a health care provider or organization hasn’t followed the rules about keeping your health information private (called HIPAA rules), you can file a complaint with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights (OCR).
