Medicaid School-Based Services
Support Medicaid reimbursement for eligible services to Medicaid-enrolled students statewide
Overview
Alaska's Medicaid School-Based Services (SBS) program helps schools get money back for certain health services provided with parental consent, to students who are enrolled in Medicaid.
The program covers things like speech therapy, occupational and physical therapy, audiology (hearing services), and nursing services, including giving medication for behavioral health needs.

Who qualifies?
Currently, schools can only get reimbursed if the student has a documented disability and the eligible services are listed in the student's Individualized Education Plan (IEP).
How to sign up
The Department of Health (DOH) is working to make changes to the School-Based Services (SBS) program. These changes aim to expand the types of services that can be reimbursed, encourage more schools to use Medicaid reimbursement, and provide services directly in schools - where children spend most of their time.
DOH is partnering with the Department of Education and Early Development (DEED) and other partners to create the Alaska Medicaid SBS Project team. This team is focused on gathering input, improving the program, and solving any challenges.
If you want to learn more or get involved in the SBS program, contact the program managers.
Center for Medicaid Services Grant
We received a grant from the Center for Medicaid Services (CMS) to help expand the SBS program in Alaska. The grant provides $2.5 million over three years to improve and support Medicaid reimbursement for SBS.
