Overview

The Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) program is designed to identify hearing loss in newborns as early as possible, ensuring that timely interventions are made to support their development. The program typically includes screening all infants for hearing impairments shortly after birth, followed by diagnostic evaluations for those who do not pass the initial screen.

Who qualifies?

All newborns in Alaska qualify for hearing screening. Alaska law requires that hospitals and birthing centers with more than 20 births annually, provide this screening for all babies born in their facilities.

How to sign up

  • Families may request a list of all available screening facilities from the State of Alaska, Newborn Hearing Screening Program.
  • Ask your hospital or birthing center about newborn hearing screening
  • If the facility does not offer this service, ask your healthcare provider for a referral

How to use

  • The hearing screen is quick, painless, and performed by a trained professional
  • The screening will check if your baby’s hearing is normal or if more tests are needed at the time of the screen
  • If a hearing loss is detected, follow up with your healthcare provider for additional testing and support
