Overview

The Alaska Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) is an annual telephone survey that asks Alaska adults about their health, as well as behaviors that could affect their health. It includes questions about health care access, chronic conditions, nutrition, physical activity, tobacco and alcohol use, marijuana use, oral health, cancer screening, injury prevention, and demographics.

To meet the needs of all data users, results are made available to the public in several ways. Alaska BRFSS provides data through the Alaska BRFSS Data Center, published reports, and data requests.

Who qualifies?

Anyone can ask for BRFSS data by sending in a data request. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also provide statewide public use datasets for all 50 states and some territories.

How to use

Before requesting data, first review the Alaska BRFSS Data Center.

How to request data

If the information at the Alaska BRFSS Data Center does not meet your needs, please contact us.

When submitting a data request, be prepared to provide the following information:

  • Purpose of the data request
  • When you need the data
  • Year(s) of data being requested
  • Geographic areas of interest (e.g., statewide, public health region, behavioral health region)
  • Specific variables or topics of interest: For a copy of the annual survey, please email doh.brfss.info@alaska.gov.

Staff response times depend on their availability and how complex a request is.
