Overview

The Alaska Senior Farmers' Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP) helps provide fresh, unprepared, locally grown fruits and vegetables to seniors and helps expand the awareness of farmers' markets in the state. The program provides low-income seniors with checks that can be exchanged for fresh Alaska-grown fruits, vegetables, fresh-cut herbs and honey at participating farmers’ markets, authorized farms, and roadside stands within Alaska.

Who qualifies?

To qualify, you must:

  • Be an Alaska senior, age 60 or older
  • Have an income less than 185% of the federal poverty level
  • Live in an area with authorized farmer-vendors*

*To see if your area qualifies, see the list of approved sales locations on the WIC Farmers Market Nutrition Program page

Benefits are issued on a first-come, first-served basis.

If you are not able to fully participate in any part of the program because of a disability or because you cannot get a ride to a market, you can get someone to help you. You can designate someone to be your "proxy" (a person who is allowed to use your benefits to help you buy food), by filling out the proxy form.

How to use

Each senior accepted into the program receives a set amount in checks. As of 2024, that amount was $40.

This money can be used anytime during the program year, which is currently from July 1 through October 31. Checks are provided through distribution agencies on a first-come, first-served basis in areas with authorized farmers.
