About Cancer
Cancer is a disease that causes some cells in the body to grow out of control. Cancer can grow almost anywhere in the body. Most people know someone who has been sick or died from cancer.
What you can do
Everyone has a role to play in preventing cancer and improving outcomes in Alaska. Here’s how people, communities, and health care providers can help:
People
- Ask your health care provider about the right cancer screenings for you
- Make healthy choices like eating fruits and vegetables, staying active, and avoiding tobacco
- Vaccinate your children against cancers caused by HPV, or "human papillomavirus"
- Help raise awareness of cancer survivor support services, groups, and events
Public and Private Organizations
- Promote healthy policies, such as tobacco-free spaces and access to healthy foods and physical activity
- Support policies that improve access to recommended cancer screenings
- Join and participate in the Alaska Cancer Partnership
- Encourage workplace policies that support cancer survivors so they can continue to be successful employees
Health Care Providers
- Promote and provide cancer screenings, vaccinations, and other preventive care
- Stay informed on the latest screening recommendations and survivor care guidelines
- Participate in the Alaska Cancer Partnership
