Cultural Adoption
The process for cultural adoption
Overview
Cultural adoptions are considered and determined by tribal councils and then registered with the state using the cultural adoption packet.
Who qualifies?
Tribes determine whether to use the cultural adoption packet or to issue their own Tribal court adoption order.
How to register
- After a council meeting on the adoption, the Tribe is responsible for completing the cultural adoption packet
- Cultural adoption documents are legal documents and must be completed in blue or black ink
- Before sending the paperwork to Health Analytics & Vital Records, make a copy for your personal records
- Send the original paperwork and a $60 fee to Health Analytics & Vital Records for processing and a new birth certificate
- Certified copies of the adoption decree can be obtained by the Tribe or by parent with written permission of the Tribe
- Guidance on completing the adoption packet is available in the training packet
