Overview

The Vaccines For Children (VFC) Program​ is a federally funded program that provides free vaccines to children who are not vaccinated due an inability to pay.​ The VFC Program and the Alaska Vaccine Assessment Program (AVAP) offer vaccines at no cost to Alaska’s children.

Medical providers enroll with the Alaska Immunization Program to receive vaccines funded through VFC and AVAP, which are then administered in their clinics and practices.  

Who qualifies?

Children under 19 who are:

  • Medicaid-eligible
  • American Indian or Alaska Native
  • Uninsured
  • Underinsured, meaning the child has health insurance that
    • Doesn’t cover certain vaccines or any vaccines
    • ​Covers vaccines but has a fixed dollar limit or cap for vaccines

Underinsured children may only receive vaccines at a designated

  • Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC)
  • Rural Health Center (RHC)

 

Alaska children who do not qualify for the VFC program may receive vaccine funded through the AVAP program.

  • Find out if clinics take walk-in patients or make an appointment if needed

While medical providers must not charge a fee for vaccine funded through VFC and AVAP, other fees may be charged (i.e., vaccine administration, office visit and other related fees).
