Overview

Self-Measured Blood Pressure (SMBP) programs teach adults how to improve and manage blood pressure. Participants work to:

  • Make healthy choices
  • Choose healthier foods
  • Stay active
  • Control stress
  • Manage medications if needed

Repeated visits with a member of their health care team help track progress. Support from a trained health care team helps people achieve and maintain their health goals.

Who qualifies?

Alaska adults who:

  • Have high blood pressure
  • Are currently working to manage their blood pressure
  • Are at risk of developing high blood pressure

Being at risk of developing high blood pressure includes:

  • Occasional high blood pressure readings
  • A family history of high blood pressure
  • A history of high blood pressure during pregnancy

There can be benefits to SMBP even if you manage your blood pressure with medication. SMBP may reduce how much medication you need.
