Results and Reporting
Information for health care providers on lab test results, rejected samples, additional testing, and mandatory reporting
Results
Preliminary and final reports will be mailed, faxed, or electronically sent through HIPAA-compliant routes to submitters as testing is completed. Submitters will be notified of significant or critical positive results by phone or fax.
Rejections
- Specimen will be rejected as “unsatisfactory” if:
- The test request form is incomplete or improperly filled
- The specimens are unlabeled or improperly labeled
- The identifiers on the test request form do not exactly match the specimen labels
- Specimens have leaked in transit
- Specimen were collected in expired collection devices or transport materials
- Specimen criteria is not met for the type of testing requested
Please follow the full test submission instructions to avoid rejected specimens.
Additional Testing
To request additional testing on a specimen held by ASPHL or ASVL, please call us and fax a new Lab Request Form, requesting the additional testing. Additional testing cannot be performed until we receive a new Lab Request Form.
Mandatory reporting to Epidemiology
If a reportable condition is identified, healthcare providers and laboratories must report it to the section of Epidemiology. Please review Infectious Diseases Reportable by Laboratories and Infectious Diseases Reportable by Health Care Providers to see which conditions apply.

Test requests related to rabies, bioterrorism, or chemical terrorism must be approved by the Section of Epidemiology prior to submission.

Animals suspected of rabies may be submitted by health officers, public health nurses, veterinarians, physicians, law enforcement and pet owners with prior approval from Section of Epidemiology (907-269-8000 during business hours or 1- 800-478-0084 during non-business hours).
Bioterrorism or chemical terrorism
Bioterrorism or chemical terrorism
Bioterrorism or chemical terrorism specimens may be submitted by law enforcement, health care providers and diagnostic laboratories upon consultation with Section of Epidemiology (907-269-8000 during business hours or 800-478-0084 during non- business hours). Also, contact Biothreat Team (855-222-0957) or Chemical Threat Team (855-222-0951) 24/7 prior to submitting samples.
