Subacute Mental Health Facilities
Licensing, oversight, and monitoring of facilities in Alaska
Overview
In 2022, subacute mental health facilities, including crisis stabilization centers and crisis residential centers, were added to facilities licensed through the Division of Health Care Services.
Who qualifies?
All subacute mental health facilities are required to be licensed in Alaska.
Subacute Mental Health Facilities
Subacute mental health facilities are facilities, or a part or unit of a facility, that has been designed to evaluate, stabilize, and treat, on a short-term, intensive, and recovery-oriented basis, and without the use of hospitalization, individuals experiencing an acute behavioral health crisis, including a crisis stabilization center and a crisis residential center.
Types of Subacute Mental Health Facilities
A crisis residential center (CRC) is a subacute mental health facility that has a maximum stay of seven days for an involuntary admission.
A crisis stabilization center (CSC) is a subacute mental health facility that has a maximum stay of 23 hours and 59 minutes.
How to sign up
Initial licensing
If you are interested in obtaining an initial license, please complete the following steps:
- Complete Subacute Mental Health Facilities Licensing Application packet
- Pay the associated provisional licensing fee
- Provide an electronic copy of all policies and procedures
Submit all requested information to Health Facility Licensing and Certification. Your application will be reviewed by our unit staff. We will work closely with you to ensure your application meets all the licensing requirements, followed by an onsite inspection.
Provisional licensing fee: $750 + $150/bed

How to use
Renew your license
To renew your license please complete the Subacute Mental Health Facilities Licensing Application and pay the renewal fee. You must submit the required information to Health Facility Licensing and Certification before April 1 of even-numbered years.
Biennial renewal fee: $1,500 + $300 per bed

Modify your application
If the facility needs to modify previously approved applications, a modification application and associated fee must be submitted to Health Facility Licensing and Certification.
Relocation fee for a hospital: $250
Increase bed fee: $150 per bed
Miscellaneous modification fee: $250
State Licensure Modification ApplicationReport leadership change
If the facility has a change in administrative leadership, a Change of Leadership form needs to be completed and submitted to Health Facility Licensing and Certification.
