HIV/STD Program

Section of Epidemiology encourages comprehensive HIV/STD testing for:
  • Person with multiple and/or anonymous sexual partners
  • Persons having met sexual partners via apps (Grindr, Snapchat, etc.)
  • Persons having condomless/barrierless sex

    About the Program

    The HIV/STD Program addresses public health issues and activities with the goal of preventing sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in Alaska. The HIV/STD Program staff apply the best available scientific information, public health program experience, and epidemiological methods to help guide statewide disease prevention and control strategies, policies, and activities.


    HIV/STD Program activities include:

    • Conducting disease investigations and surveillance activities for STDs (gonorrhea, chlamydia, and syphilis), and HIV/AIDS
        • Identifying active HIV/STD infections;
        • Assisting with staging diagnosis;
        • Referring and following up with treatment and care services;
        • Interviewing patients for sexual partners;
        • Assisting patients with confidentially notifying partners of potential exposures;
        • Assisting patient’s partners with accessing screening and treatment, as appropriate;
    • Analyzing and publishing Alaska HIV/STI data and public health recommendations for health care providers and the broader community (see Epidemiology Bulletins);
    • Providing public health policy guidance related to HIV and STDs;
    • Working with State Public Health Laboratories to make appropriate screening technology available for detection of HIV and STDs;
    • Providing targeted HIV Prevention and Care grants and technical assistance on HIV best practices to community based and local government organizations, consistent with priorities developed in the program’s Integrated HIV Prevention and Care Plan;
    • Providing training for health and social service providers on topics such as HIV/STD prevention services, patient counseling, and HIV/STD testing;
    • Conducting activities to evaluate programmatic efforts to prevention and control HIV and STDs.
