HIV/STD Testing and Services Locations In Alaska

Alaska Has High Rates of STDs

From national data released by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in 2022 Alaska ranked among the top states in the country for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). In 2022, Alaska was ranked #3 for highest rates of Chlamydia, #4 for Gonorrhea, #16 for primary and secondary (contagious) syphilis, and #13 for congenital syphilis.

Let’s lower these rankings and break down the stigma surrounding HIV/STDs. Start by learning the facts of sexually transmitted diseases and getting tested regularly. Be brave, start the conversation about HIV/STDs with your sexual partners, your health care provider, and with friends!

Where to Get an HIV/STD Test

Don’t forget to ask for multi-site STD testing (testing all body parts that could be infected) and an HIV test. When you receive treatment, ask your provider about medication to give to your partner[s] to treat them too (expedited partner therapy - EPT).
  • If you have one, ask your primary care provider. All insurance, including Medicaid, covers HIV/STD testing and treatment.

Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV Prevention

  • PrEP is a prescription medication that helps protect anyone from HIV infection.
  • If you have one, ask your primary care provider. Any licensed doctor, physician assistant, or nurse practitioner can prescribe PrEP. Insurance, including Medicaid, covers oral PrEP, including office visits, labs, and medication.

Online PrEP

In addition to in-person office visits, PrEP can also be obtained through several online telehealth services. While most of these services provide discreet, low-cost or no-cost with insurance, and easy access to PrEP, some do not test for syphilis or other STDs and not all do the recommended blood tests while you are taking PrEP, including checking for pregnancy (in people who can become pregnant) and checking on your liver and kidneys regularly. Testing for STDs and pregnancy can be done through your local public health center or another health care provider. Additionally, due to the remote location of some Alaskan communities, mailed medications may be delayed in arrival. Online PrEP services include:
