The Caregiver Advise, Record, Enable (CARE) Act went into effect as state law on January 1, 2017.  Alaska became the 32nd state/territory to sign the CARE Act in law.

The CARE Act supports family caregivers when their loved ones go into the hospital and as they transition home. The law requires hospitals to:
  • Provide your loved on the opportunity to designate a caregiver;
  • Notify you when your loved one is to be discharged to another facility or back home;
  • Provide a demonstration either in person or recorded instruction of the medical tasks, such as medication management, injections or, wound care, and transfers that the family caregiver will perform at home.
The CARE Act (SB 72) requirements can be found in AS 18.20.500 - AS 18.20.590.
